Over the past few weeks, you may have received emails from various companies confirming that their privacy policies have been updated and asking you to renew your consent to receive marketing material etc.
This is in anticipation of the new data laws which come into force today.
The new laws apply to all businesses handling the data of EU residents. The UK’s proposed departure from the EU in the next 12 months does not exempt UK businesses from the new rules, which will still apply.
The laws are aimed at protecting personal data rights and tough sanctions can be imposed on companies that breach the laws.
